Abstract and Keywords

The distinctive qualities of Middleton's poetry are best demonstrated in The Wisdom of Solomon Paraphrased. This poem was his first publication; it appeared in 1597 when the poet was still an adolescent. This article attempts to give some sense of how this extraordinary poem functions as a language machine, sometimes coinciding with the biblical book that is its source, and sometimes working on its own and producing its own meanings.
