Abstract and Keywords

This article provides a brief review of some ideas and results from the political economy literature on the size of nations. It determines the benefits and costs of national size, and then presents a simple analytical framework for understanding several basic issues about the formation and break-up of nations. Compensations, redistribution, income inequality, borders, and conflict between nations are some of the topics that are also covered in this article.
