Abstract and Keywords

As the first farming culture over a large area, the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) occupies a key position in the central European Neolithic. This is not only the first culture group to introduce pottery in many regions, but ceramic finds are also the most important body of evidence for this period. Potting was carried out on a household basis in a technologically simple but often very labour-intensive way. Ceramics were an important aspect of material culture and indispensable for economic activities and consumption at the domestic level, as well as for many formal and ritual occasions. A large proportion of the vessels are decorated with complex motifs, which can be interpreted as signs with specific meanings. This code most prominently conveyed basic religious symbols, but information on family affiliation is represented in peripheral areas of the vessels. While at the beginning of the LBK, the use of these signs was apparently very conservative and the subject of strict social control, later on a dynamic development is evident and personal expression becomes increasingly important.
