Abstract and Keywords

This article examines the historical relation between modernist coteries and communities. It suggests that any account of modernism in relation to coterie and community needs to include those moments of union in which the opposition between them becomes indistinct, or even breaks down entirely. The article explains that within the complex interweavings of personality and artistic intent, there is always a dialectical interplay between coterie and community that forces us to think carefully about the political and cultural identities of modernism's assorted factions and sub-factions, and the ways in which those identities inform the artworks and cultural commentaries of modernism themselves.

Keywords: modernist coteries, communities, modernism, artistic intent, political identities, cultural identities
