Abstract and Keywords

This article examines the historical relation between modernism and the visual arts. It explains that what constituted ‘the modern’ was constantly shifting within the landscape of art in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thus, to be modern could mean a radical approach to facture and the formal qualities of the artistic medium, and the creation of new visual languages through which to assess modernity, or it might refer to the new subjects for art that registered the alienating and exhilarating experiences of mechanized, industrialized, and urbanized life. The article explores the idea of remapping the histories of modern art in the case of British modernism.
