Abstract and Keywords

This article concentrates on the firm as the context of human capital (HC) development and application, though its focus is on global firms. Its analysis reaches back into the urban sociology of Gouldner and Merton and adopts their classic distinction between ‘locals’ and ‘cosmopolitans’, the latter having several languages and travel experience to add to their HC. The article argues that cosmopolitan HC is essential for firms competing in the globalized economy. Its intent is to understand how such HC is developed. In a neat move, the article appropriates much of the HC literature's thinking about the impact of parent attitudes, learning habits, and education on their children's educational development. It repositions the corporation as a form of intellectual parent, defined as the custodian or context of the relevant ‘global cultural capital’.
