Abstract and Keywords

This chapter explores approaches to designing and utilizing improvised movement scores in site-specific dance-making. It considers the nature of improvisatory scores and their creative potential when applied in the site-dance context and explores how they are designed, applied, and managed by practitioners. Informed by examples from practice and from phenomenological and spatial theory, the chapter examines how scores lead practitioners towards and divert them away from specific site components and questions how they facilitate the management of architectural, spatial, and sensory ‘data’ in site-dance processes.

Keywords: site-specific dance, choreography, scores, improvisation, space and place
