Abstract and Keywords

This chapter presents a transatlantic improvised duet enacted through the medium of email. The authors, a dance artist and visual artist, respectively, stir up memories of a shared past in Berlin, Germany. Sifting through these remains, they discover new harmonies and dissonances as they improvise a duet of keystrokes. The authors share a virtual space but are not always on the same page as they revisit hours spent together in a sun-flooded dance studio at Tanzfabrik. Together and alone, they experience a dissolution of lines separating past, present, memory, and imagination as new thoughts and images take shape through their words. While several years and an ocean stand between their present bodies and shared past, a brittle intimacy emerges.

Keywords: dance, improvisation, visual art, memory, phenomenology
