Abstract and Keywords

This article examines civic religious drama in medieval England. Medieval spectators saw the civic religious drama as emerging from, or alluding to, a broad matrix of generically related forms of play and public ceremony which they could experience on other occasions, such as royal entries, heraldic announcements, and religious ritual including the Mass. This article describes the 2008 Passion Play in Winchester and suggests that this performance was a clear continuation of medieval practice.

Keywords: civic religious drama, medieval England, public ceremony, religious ritual, heraldic announcements, Passion Play, Winchester
