Abstract and Keywords

This article describes in detail the wars England engaged in against Spain between 1585 and 1604. It talks about how this war is often regarded as a predominantly naval war and the importance of the war on sea has adopted in the history of the Elizabethan reign. The article emphasizes, in contrast, the part land warfare played in the conflict. In particular the article discusses the role of Robert Devereux, second Earl of Essex in the war.
