Abstract and Keywords

This chapter aims to introduce the subdiscipline of media literacy through the examination of the genre’s history, current challenges, and possible future directions. With roots dating back to the late 1920s, the idea of educating consumers about the content and production methods of media messages has been attempted in a number of ways and venues. With media consumption a large part of most people’s leisure time, the need to get individuals to more critically engage the messages continues to be an important educational objective. The largest challenge, however, is the lack of government support for such an initiative coupled with an apparent lack of awareness on the part of most people. What needs to occur is a more organized and systematic approach for the inclusion of media literacy instruction in secondary and higher education.
