This article outlines the scholarship on party organizations in the South and the activists who participate in them. It begins with an introduction to party organizations and what they do, followed by a discussion of the development of state and local parties in the southern states. Next it turns to contemporary party organizations and the activists who staff them. It concludes with brief comments on potential challenges facing political parties in the South and elsewhere.
