Abstract and Keywords

This chapter discusses sleep in psychiatric disorders, including mood, anxiety, psychotic, eating, and two personality disorders—borderline and antisocial. The extant literature on sleep in psychiatric conditions has focused on insomnia symptoms with little attention to insomnia disorder and other comorbid sleep disorders, which are consequently less extensively covered. For each psychiatric disorder we describe what is known about associated sleep symptoms (subjective), polysomnographic findings pertaining to abnormal sleep architecture (objective), comorbid sleep disorders and other sleep abnormalities, and the clinical significance of the sleep symptoms. The chapter concludes with a discussion of issues relevant to the implication of available research to the psychological treatment of sleep disorders that occur in the context of psychiatric comorbidities and future directions for research.

Keywords: depression, bipolar, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, eating disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders
