Abstract and Keywords

This chapter examines the soundscape of the cosmopolitan centers of urban and semi-urban south India. It explains that music is an integral part of the urban sonic experience and that music in urban centers is experienced along with other sounds such as automobile engines and horns. It also considers the possibilities for mobile music in the urban and semi-urban south Indian context to take musical genres and conventions into account alongside cultural norms of privacy and sonic value.
