Abstract and Keywords

This article discusses slaves and slavery in Roman society. It discusses the disputes regarding the definition of the term “slave”, and then moves on to describe the various social relations of slaves. These are the slave “family” and their relations with other slaves in society. The article also determines the social differentiation of slaves, and that the permanent subjection to the unrestricted power of another person or institution was a feature common to all slaves.
