Abstract and Keywords

This chapter examines issues related to the social imaginary of virtual worlds. It analyzes how common representations take shape between different stakeholders concerned with a technology and considers the imaginatively created common world required to invent and develop a technical device such as virtual reality. It also discusses how the two salient characteristics of the socio-technical imaginary emerge. These include the imaginary as a constituent element of identity and of the coherence of a human group and as offering alternatives for exploring possibilities for creating innovation.
