Abstract and Keywords

While the field of pediatric neuropsychology is young, neuropsychological assessment of children has much to offer toward understanding the functional systems of the brain and the mechanisms involved in learning. Child neuropsychology provides a theoretical framework for understanding patterns of strengths and weaknesses, and the extent to which patterns may remain stable over time. Once the clinician identifies the assessment needs of the individual child, he or she must make decisions regarding the appropriate assessment measures for exploring the dimensions of behavior. When an evaluation is complete, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of a child provides the neuropsychologist with needed information to recommended appropriate interventions. When communicating results, the clinician must remember that the audience includes caregivers who need straight-forward, easily understood information. Of paramount importance, clinicians must recognize that providing useful, scientifically supported conclusions that contribute to the treatment of the child is the ultimate purpose of assessment.
