Abstract and Keywords

To navigate any universe, it helps to have a guide. This chapter takes readers on a lightning-fast journey through a nearly 40-year-old socialization literature that has generated many theoretical and empirical articles and become a core area of study in organizational behavior and human resource management. We visit the numerous theoretical perspectives and major questions (and answers) in the literature, comment on the different methodological approaches used to study socialization, and present ideas about future galaxies to be explored in subsequent research on socialization. We end our tour with our list of the “top 10” must reads in the socialization literature and some thoughts from an early explorer of this domain. We hope that our chapter provides a useful overview of research on socialization not only for individuals who are familiar with some of this work, but also for readers who are encountering it for the first time.

Keywords: socialization, proactivity, newcomers, adjustment, learning, identity, uncertainty
