Abstract and Keywords
Using recruitment sources, employers and employees learn about each other and meet on the labor market. The choice of a recruitment source (mix) is important for both applicant attraction and the quality and length of an employment relationship. This chapter provides a long-term and process-oriented perspective on the recruitment source–tenure relationship. It develops a theoretical model that explicates three basic and partially interrelated explanations for this relationship: individual differences, incomplete information, and socialization processes. In addition, it also discusses potential mediators. Further, it summarizes some of the methodological problems—namely, unobserved heterogeneity and the process character of employment relationships—that challenge empirical researchers in the field. Finally, it concludes by suggesting avenues for future research, with a focus on Web-based recruitment sources and choices of recruitment source mixes.
