Abstract and Keywords

This article examines the concept of Methodist discipline, which has sustained a purpose, style, and tone distinct among Protestant traditions. Its distinctive understanding of what discipline is in the life of the Christian community has evolved in eight phases of Methodist development. These are (i) Methodist discipline as common rule of life; (ii) its nature as a connexional conversation; (iii) constitutional phase of Methodist discipline; (iv) legal phase; (v) political phase; (vi) missional phase; (vii) pentecostal phase; and (viii) virtual phase.
