Abstract and Keywords

This chapter examines the geography of forced migration. It argues that geographical research into forced migration, although dominated by subdisciplines of human geography, has increasingly focused on the relationships between forced migration and the physical environment. It also considers the use of research tools such as remote sensing, Geographical Positioning Systems (GPS), and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in emergency response planning. Furthermore, it comments on issues of space and scale that are addressed by social scientific approaches and the attitude of geographers toward the concept of the ‘environmental refugee’.
