Abstract and Keywords

This article describes the development of appearance preferences during childhood and adolescence; identifies influences on the development of these preferences; considers the effects of these preferences on self-development and social interactions; and discusses techniques that children and adolescents use to achieve an appearance that is consistent with their preferences. While there are numerous components of appearance, the research concerning children and adolescents has focused primarily on facial attractiveness and body shape, particularly weight and shape.
