Abstract and Keywords

This chapter discusses the concept of mental health versus mental illness and tackles the societal implications of mental health promotion and protection (MHPP) policies. The dual continua model is used to demonstrate the importance of mental health (flourishing vs. languishing) on overall well-being. This chapter focuses primarily on data from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study, contributing evidence of prevalence and the dynamic nature of mental health over a 20-year period.
