Abstract and Keywords

This chapter deals with vestibular mechanisms in motor control of eye movements with a focus on all three rotational degrees of freedom of movements. After a short overview in the first section, we address in the following the problem of inertial motion detection and kinematic restrictions, which are essential for an understanding of the spatiotemporal organization of the vestibulo-ocular reflexes (VOR). In the last two sections, finally, we discuss the issue of optimal retinal image stabilization and gain modulations by target proximity in both the rotational and translational VOR.
