The original idea for a Handbook of Inter‐organizational Relations came out of early meetings of the British Academy of Management's Special Interest Group in Inter‐organizational Relations (SIGIOR), where members were trying to understand what did—or might have—linked their somewhat disparate perspectives on the topic together. We are indebted to those who were present then for providing the impetus for the Handbook. More recently, SIGIOR helped us to formulate our understanding of IOR as a field. We thank all who contributed. Beyond this, two people have made a big difference to our ability to complete the project. Val Turner provided endless help with matters administrative, ensuring that none of us ever had to sleep on the streets. Kristof Kruse worked on the detail of the final manuscript and so allowed us to concentrate on the primary editorial task.
