Abstract and Keywords

This article focuses on the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas. It begins by tracing the movement’s history and development. It then examines Hamas’s identity, as reflected by its programs and activities based on the principles of Muslim revivalism. It discusses the prevailing perception of Hamas as an obstacle to peace, organizing terror attacks against Israel, and undermining the efforts of pro-negotiation Palestinian leaders like President Mahmoud Abbas. Internal conflicts within the movement’s leadership are also considered.
