Abstract and Keywords

This article examines the challenges faced by Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, the Nahdatul Ulama (NU), in the first decade of democracy as it struggled to defend its interests and deal with new demands. It considers the impact of events such as its increased international stature after 9/11 and the Bali bombings, the impeachment of Abdurrahman Wahid in 2001, and the rise of new and less conservative political parties catering to the young liberal generation.
