(p. 624) (p. 625) Index of Personal Names and Titles

(p. 624) (p. 625) Index of Personal Names and Titles

Note: While the “Index of Names and Titles” does not aim for utter completeness, it includes, in addition to medieval Latin authors, the names of classical Latin authors that appear in the Handbook; Greek authors (classical, patristic and Byzantine); Arabic and Hebrew authors; vernacular authors; select modern scholars (but none living); and other significant historical figures (e.g., popes, secular rulers). With names from so many traditions and times, absolute consistency is elusive; we have tried to list individuals under the names we anticipate our readers will look for, providing cross-references when appropriate. Variant forms of names, especially if they appear above, are listed (e.g, Ibn-Rushd and Averroes, Vergil and Virgil). Names of figures not or not certainly historical (e.g., Biblical, mythological, legendary) are generally excluded. All dates are CE unless otherwise noted.

In addition, the titles of anonymous works and anthologies are included;1 works belonging to a named author are not listed separately under the author's name. Scriptures (of various traditions), however, are indexed in the “Index of Topics,” as are names of places (e.g., cities, monasteries).
