Abstract and Keywords
This chapter reviews the types of explanations of animal timing behavior that the author used in articles published between 1956 and 2010. It focuses on the explanation of the results of 25 articles on timing. The types of explanations were behavioristic, cognitive, biological, and quantitative. They were used roughly in this chronological order: with the use of behavioristic general principles of behavior in the 1950s and 1960s, the concept of a cognitive internal clock in the 1970s, biological mechanisms in the 1980s, and quantitative models of timing behavior from the 1980s until the present. The articles between 2003 and 2010 focus on the generality of quantitative models that have a modular structure.
