Abstract and Keywords

Well-qualified teachers are critical to the success of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This chapter focuses on the joys of teaching, as well as on the challenges of preparing teacher candidates to provide appropriate services to the heterogeneous population of students currently in our schools. In addition, recommendations are presented including the need to look beyond the issues of communication and placement, the increased use of formative and standardized data, and a greater attention to developing programs of study that help students leaving high school develop the ability to reach their maximum potential and lead fulfilling adult lives.
