Abstract and Keywords

This chapter examines issues related to the classification of anxiety and related disorders. The chapter reviews evidence of the reliability and validity of DSM-IV disorder categories, patterns of comorbidity, models of the relationships between disorders and higher-order personality variables, and evidence of shared genetic vulnerabilities for anxiety disorders. Future research directions, including the movement toward a dimensional classification system, are discussed.
