Wolff Heintschel von Heinegg is Professor of Public Law at the Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany. He is the current Charles H. Stockton Professor of International Law at the US Naval War College in Newport, United States, a position he also held in 2003–04.



Jean-Marie Henckaerts is a Legal Adviser in the Legal Division of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He was head of the ICRC’s project on customary international humanitarian law from 2000–10 and is currently heading the ICRC’s project to update the Commentaries on the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols of 1977.



Derek Jinks is the Marrs McLean Professor in Law at the University of Texas School of Law, United States and he has served on the US Department of State’s Advisory Committee on International Law since 2006.



Jakob Kellenberger teaches at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, the University of Salamanca and is a visiting Professor at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva. He is former State Secretary for Foreign Affairs for Switzerland and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (2000–12).

Nils Melzer held the Swiss Chair of International Humanitarian Law at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, Switzerland until September 2013. He is Senior Programme Advisor and Senior Fellow of the Emerging Security Challenges Programme at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), Switzerland.



Theodor Meron is President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.



Nicolas Michel is Professor of Public International Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva as well as at the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. He is President of the Board of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. He served as Under-Secretary- General for Legal Affairs, the Legal Counsel of the United Nations (2004-2008).



Yasmin Naqvi is a Legal Officer in the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.



Manfred Nowak is Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, Austria. He is also Co-Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights in Vienna, Austria and was UN Special Rapporteur on Torture from 2004–10. He was formerly Swiss Chair of Human Rights at the Geneva Academy.



Roger O’Keefe is University Senior Lecturer in Law and Deputy Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge, and Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge.



Alice Priddy is a researcher at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.



Eibe Riedel is Professor (Emeritus) of International, European and Comparative Public Law at the University of Manheim, Visiting Professor at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, and formerly Swiss Chair of Human Rights.



Peter Rowe is Professor of Law at the University of Lancaster, England. He has been Chairman of the UK Group of the International Society for Military Law and the Laws of War.



Yves Sandoz served for 18 years as Director for International Law and Policy at the International Committee of the Red Cross. He was elected to the Assembly of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 2002.



William A. Schabas is Professor of International Law at Middlesex University, London, Professor of International Criminal Law and Human Rights at Leiden University and Professor (Emeritus) of Human Rights Law at the National University of Ireland Galway. (p. lxxxiv)



Michael N. Schmitt is Chairman of the International Law Department at the US Naval War Law College. He is also Honorary Professor of International Humanitarian Law at Durham University in the United Kingdom.



Paul Seger is the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York. Before his present assignment he served as the Legal Adviser and Head of the Directorate for International Law in the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs.



Philip Spoerri is Director for International Law and Cooperation at the International Committee of the Red Cross



Christian Tomuschat is Professor of International and Constitutional Law at Humboldt University Berlin. He was a member of the Human Rights Committee under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights from 1977–86 and a member (and chairman) of the International Law Commission (1985–96).



David Weissbrodt is the Regents Professor and Fredrikson & Byron Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota, United States. He is also the Co-Director of the Human Rights Center and Human Rights Library at the University of Minnesota.
