Psychology

Psychology encompasses the scientific study of behavior in all of its extraordinary diversity. Some psychologists devote themselves to research on the behavior of individuals or groups, or relationships among the brain, central nervous system, and behavior. Others occupy themselves in practice: treating patients suffering from psychological disorders or disordered relationships; counseling college students with learning and relationship problems; working with school children who may be experiencing learning disabilities or school adjustment problems; or helping businesses and their employees deal with interpersonal and organizational problems. The articles included in OHO represent psychology’s principal subfields: clinical psychology, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, counseling psychology, developmental psychology, health psychology, the history of psychology, industrial/organization psychology, methods and measurement in psychology, neuropsychology, and personality and social psychology. One of the most dynamic of the behavioral sciences, psychology extends its reach to a constantly changing array of research topics, which are reflected in the multitude of articles included on this site.


Editor in Chief

Peter Nathan is University of Iowa Foundation Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Public Health Emeritus. He has written many articles, chapters, and reviews, and received a number of research grants from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He has published four Oxford University Press books, the three editions of A Guide to Treatments that Work, with Jack M. Gorman, and Treating Mental Disorders: A Guide to What Works, with Gorman and Neal Salkind. Dr. Nathan served for 5½ years as provost at the University of Iowa; he served previously as Senior Program Officer at the MacArthur Foundation, and as Henry and Anna Starr Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University. He received the 1998-1999 American Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge.

OUP: What led you to participate in this project?

Nathan: My years as US delegate in psychology and editor of the Oxford Library of Psychology have convinced me that Oxford can now provide colleagues and students around the world with a unique online resource that offers absolutely unparalleled access to the past, present, and exciting future of psychological research, theory and practice.
