Abstract and Keywords

Tomb decoration in the Valley of the Kings is distinguished by considerable variations in technology. Excavation into high quality limestone rock encouraged the finishing of refined interiors, allowing for superb relief carving directly into the rock, and facilitated plaster application and its carving on an immense scale. Decoration conveyed important symbolic meaning, which further contributed to technical achievements with respect to use of preparatory and ground layers and the choice, preparation, and application of pigments. Royal patronage committed substantial human resources to the multiple tasks involved in tomb decoration, leading to developments in techniques of rock finishing, setting out, drawing, and painting. Workshop practices and the employment of large teams of craftsmen also led to divergent technical outcomes. Aspects of tomb decoration were further influenced by length of reign and variable political and economic circumstances, contributing to technical incongruities.

Keywords: tomb decoration, plastering, relief carving, preparatory layers, ground layers, setting out, drawing, painting, pigments
