Abstract and Keywords

We propose that the relationship between retirement planning and subsequent adaptation is moderated by two types of fit between personal characteristics and the retirement environment. The first type is the fit between the change in the post-retirement environment and the change management resources of the individual. Dimensions of environmental change include work content, organizational context, work/leisure balance, and conditions of organizational exit. Change management resources include health, motivational/cognitive belief systems related to mastery and control of the environment, personality factors associated with adaptation, social resources, and marketable job skills. The second type of fit is the match between an individual’s financial, social, generative, and work-oriented needs and the extent to which these are addressed in retirement planning and satisfied in the post-retirement environment (Wang & Shultz, 2010 ). Throughout the chapter, we discuss the importance of modifying change management resources and addressing individual needs through planning as a means to maximize the planning-adaptation relationship.
