Abstract and Keywords

This chapter details events in the final year of Shelley's life. The last year of his life seemed to be full of portents of his death: from the white arcaded house he had taken for the summer at San Terenzo, so isolated and austere, too near the sea; to his new yacht the Don Juan, so foolishly rigged and engineered for speed; to his wistfulness for the past and his bad dreams. On 8 July 1822, Shelley drowned in a sudden storm while sailing back home on the Don Juan.
